Swiss health insurance - Emigration Switzerland
Health is the most important asset of all. That's why health insurance is essential when you start your life in Switzerland as a German.
In Switzerland, health insurance is compulsory for all citizens. As part of this obligation, everyone must take out basic insurance that covers a defined minimum catalogue of benefits. Insurance premiums vary depending on age, place of residence, insurance provider and the model chosen. The law guarantees that no-one can be refused cover on the basis of their state of health.
As basic insurance does not cover all costs, voluntary supplementary insurance is an important addition in Switzerland. These include, for example, preventive medical check-ups at the family doctor or hospital insurance, where you can choose the hospital doctor for an inpatient stay, i.e. for an operation (semi-private ward).
However, health insurance premiums are now considered one of the main factors that worry Swiss people when it comes to budget planning. This makes it all the more important that you understand the individual components of health insurance when emigrating to Switzerland. In a free consultation, we will explain to you how to find the right health insurance for you 🤗
Personal liability
Personal liability insurance is one of the most important types of insurance in Switzerland. And there are good reasons for this: It covers damage that you unintentionally cause to third parties. Imagine you accidentally cause damage to someone else's property or your child kicks a football through the neighbour's window - something like that can quickly become expensive. Personal liability insurance therefore covers the costs if you accidentally cause damage to property or people that do not belong to you. Depending on the contract, defence against unjustified claims by third parties is also included.
Household contents insurance
There are goods that we simply need. And then there are those that are really dear to us. Household contents insurance protects your belongings - from your coffee machine to your beloved e-bike. It usually covers damage to your personal belongings caused by fire, water, burglary or other hazards. Just imagine arriving home after work to find your home flooded because a water pipe has burst. Although the emotional damage remains (Switzerland also has a large number of mental coaches and therapists, by the way), you will at least be reimbursed for some of the value of the goods. Perhaps that will comfort you a little...
A great feature of household contents insurance in Switzerland is the option to adjust your insurance cover depending on the value of your household contents. Do you live in a smaller flat with few valuables? Then you can reduce your cover accordingly. If, on the other hand, you have expensive furniture, electronics and an inherited art painting in your home, you can (and should) increase your cover accordingly.
Legal protection
In the event of a legal conflict, legal expenses insurance can be worth its weight in gold. This is because it covers the costs of lawyers, court costs and consultations if you find yourself in a legal dispute - whether it's over a car accident, a conflict with your employer or a neighbourhood dispute.
Car insurance
Emigrating to Switzerland: If you are travelling by car 🚗 in Switzerland, you will definitely need car insurance. Liability insurance is mandatory for all vehicles in Switzerland. It covers damage that you cause to other vehicles, people or property with your car. Without this basic insurance, your vehicle is not even allowed on the road in Switzerland.
In addition, there are two optional insurances that you can take out: the Comprehensive insurance and the Fully comprehensive insurance. Partial casco covers damage caused by external circumstances such as theft, vandalism or natural events (e.g. hail). Fully comprehensive insurance goes one step further and also covers the costs of damage you have caused to your car yourself, for example in the event of an accident caused by you. Particularly in Switzerland (where cars are often very expensive), fully comprehensive insurance can be a sensible investment, especially if you drive a new or valuable vehicle.
Rent deposit insurance
Before you can move into your new flat in Switzerland, the landlord will require a rental deposit - usually a sum equivalent to three months' rent. You can often choose between rental deposit insurance or a blocked rental deposit account.
With the classic Rental deposit blocked account you deposit the deposit amount in a special bank account. The money remains blocked until the tenancy ends and the landlord is satisfied that there is no damage or outstanding costs. Only then will the money be released - and you will receive the deposit back. For tenants, as already mentioned, this means that a considerable amount of money remains blocked for the entire duration of the tenancy, which can be a financial burden, especially if the rental costs are high.
The Rent deposit insurance works differently. Instead of paying the deposit into a bank account, you simply pay an annual premium to an insurance company. The insurance company acts as a guarantor for your landlord. So if there is any damage or outstanding rent payments, the landlord is covered by the insurance. This is a guarantee: if you cause damage, you must subsequently pay the amount of the damage to the insurance company. It is important to know that the rental deposit insurance must usually be taken out before you move into the flat. You can easily take out this insurance via Deine3a. The landlord often requires proof of this.
